so I installed 1.4_BETA by copying the binary sets to a dos partition and
installing from there, now I can look at dmesg and see:
NetBSD 1.4_BETA (GENERIC) #1: Wed Apr 21 09:17:06 PDT 1999
root@struis:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC
...
ep0 at isa0 port 0x250-0x25f irq 10: 3Com 3C509 Ethernet
ep0: address 00:c0:4f:c3:cb:29, 8KB byte-wide FIFO, 5:3 Rx:Tx split
ep0: 10baseT (default 10baseT)
...
isapnp0: read port 0x203
ep1 at isapnp0 port 0x210/16 irq 9
ep1: 3Com 3C509B EtherLink III
ep1: address 00:c0:4f:c3:cb:29, 8KB byte-wide FIFO, 5:3 Rx:Tx split
ep1: 10baseT (default 10baseT)
...
and the network seems to work fine. It just didn't work with the install
disk.
