No, no, it's not. It's just wires. The *CompactFlash card itself* has
both IDE controller and disk emulation built onto it.
You can get another adapter for like $10 if you're worried that it's
the cause of the problem -- SanDisk used to give them away free with
every card, actually, though they eventually stopped.

You might try booting with the card inserted -- I haven't actually
ever tried hot-swapping wdc.
