For what it is worth, I still am getting garbage characters on my 
screen after exiting from X Windows.

This problem was originally observed using the following configuration:

  NetBSD 1.4/i386, Number Nine Motion 771 video card (S3 based), using
  the version of XFree86 shipped with NetBSD 1.4. 

My configuration has changed slightly:

  NetBSD 1.4/i386, 3dfx Voodoo3 2000 video card, using version 3.3.4 of
  XFree86.

Anyone have any suggestions for ways to track this problem down??
