The GENERIC kernel does nothing - it only prints the information.
There are some attachments which can be activated in the
config file:
com* at pnpbios?: useful if unusual interrupts are used (as irq10
  on a ThinkPad 390)
sb* at pnpbios?: uses the Soundblaster mode of the Neomagic
  chip (8-bit only, unfortunately)
Soren's stuff, soon on zelof1:
ym* at pnpbios?: sound on a Toshiba Portege
pciide* at pnpbios?: IDE (which can do DMA but doesn't identify
  as PCI chip) on a Portege
Other attachments, as for Parallel port, clock and other standard
ISA stuff, would be trivial to add, but was not necessary so far
because it used standard ressources.
