Does the Xserver start and give you that black/white pattern and a
mouse cursor, just the login-widget is missing? Or do you get no
Xserver at all?

Usually xdm should be setup to work properly in the normal
distribution. However, you must make sure that X11 itself is properly
configured. If the Xserver does not start, use XF86Setup (available as
a package) or xf86config (included with the X11 distribution) to do
so.

You might also check the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-errors to
give you a clue what went wrong.
