No, the xserver doesn't start with xdm. It will start and runs fine when
I use startx, but with just xmd running I get no black and white screen or
mouse cursor.

I couldn't find that file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-errors on my system,
but I did have an error file in /var/log/xdm. Here is a little piece of
that file:

If I weren't such a newbie, I'd probably be able to figure this
out from here. but I'm still having trouble. Does anyone know
what the problem might be?
