So, if I do 'apm -z' on my Thinkpad 380Z (1.4K), it appears to sleep, but
it chews up battery and stays warm.

In a previous life, I'm fairly sure I had it "properly" shutting down.

Any clues?

A data point:  It used to require you to hit power to wake it up, now it
doesn't.
