Same deal.  (BTW, chopps just put in a fix for that, I think.)

Anyway, it looks like my problem *may* be that I need to tell my BIOS to
reserve memory.  The problem?  If I tell it to reserve 64k at d0000, I
can't boot, because it ignores/doesn't see my Symbios SCSI controller!

I hate i386. ;)
