Whatever works? I know that's not what you want to hear, but there
are such a variety of #$!$!@#$ awful BIOSes out there that there is no
one right way.
I have one machine that autodetects a disk just fine ... but won't
boot from it unless I set the *same* parameters manually. Go figure.
For what it is worth I try to use autodetection where possible, then
LBA, then NORMAL mode.
Remember PC hardware is fast and cheap. The corollary is that it is
nasty. :-(
