Is no-one compiling that with -Wall ?? Even I can see that "error"
there is (sometimes) used without being set ?
Try changing
int error;
to
int error = 0;
and see if that helps at all (and then send in a PR if it does).

ps: I don't really thing this is likely to be a port-i386 issue.
