How big is the performance hit really?

How many people who would notice the reduced performance would _not_
build their own kernel anyway?

According to INSTALL.txt you cannot. After all, the GENERIC kernel is
about 3 MB in size!

But there are a lot of 386 out there with 5 (could those run a
GENEREIC kernel? Maybe I'll test some day), 8, or even 32 MB.
