Except that this time it failed in some manner I don't understand and I
do need to do something, as you suggest here:

'dmesg' provided reasonable looking value for com0 and com1. Where are
these values stored and what programs read the values? Where is the
linkage broken? If I knew I would fix it.

Where is the information I need for PPP? Then, where is the information
about the abstract kernel customization?
I certainly see the value in your suggestions. Since I am new to UNIX,
nothing is obvious.
