I've figured out a substantial part of how to "fix" the wi0 problems.
I've got a new pcmciadevs and if_wi.c that recognize the D-Link and Linksys
cards and probe them as Prism II cards successfully.  (The same fix would
likely work for the Farallon Skyline referred to in an XXX comment.)

So, I put one of these cards in another system, which handles ray0 fine,
and it got read errors on everything all the time.  I've tried increasing
the alignment requirements, but no luck.  I'm currently rebuilding,
experimentally changing the IO width for pcmcia_io_map to 8 bits, since I
had problems with 16-bit access on a ray0 using the same ISA adapter.
