I have found that the problem was the Gigabyte GA-6VX motherboard. A GA-6VXE
motherboard din't work either. Both of these have VIA chipsets. After using
a motherboard with an Intel chipset, with all other hardware identical, the
system boots fine.

Just a warning to anyone seeing similar problems when installing 1.5....
