I had something like that happen to me (on an IDE drive connected to
ann Alpha PC164) - I just assumed that the drive was dead, and replaced
it (it was a bit on the small side anyway), and the errors haven't come
back.
I'd very much suspect a dead (dying) drive - for me things certainly
kept on getting worse over time while the bad drive was still connected.
