Good theory.  Is it possible to create /var (and even perhaps / ) as
logging filesystems - and do you think that would solve the problem?

	One option is to have two filesystems, / and /var. Leave /
        mounted
	readonly and set the fsck of /var to use '-f' for the very small
	chance something bad could happen there.

	To admin the box mount / rw, then downgrade it to ro when done.
