I wasn't questioning whether NetBSD had a reliable means of identifying
the CPU class. Rather, I was asking if it was possible that what NetBSD
identifies as a Pentium might have been legitimately marketed (by Intel or
one Gateway, et al) as a PentiumII.
The two questions are related, but not the same.
From what others have said, it sounds like an illegitimate swap has taken
place, compared with the actual PentiumII 233 in a desktop that I have.
