After my first day's serious work using StarOffice, I must say that 
it's really like the Windows apps it emulates -- it core-dumped once, 
hung once, and froze X once, though I was able to recover by logging in 
from another machine....  (For what it's worth, this was on 1.5Y with
X 4.1.0.)
