Are you sure that sendmail is responsible?

More likely is ipmon - needs ipmon_flags="-Dns" for current.

sendmail does rather like to have a fully qualified domain though!
Given how cheap they are, it is probably worth buyng one :-)

Also if you don't start sendmail as a daemon, it is used by other
parts of the system as a mail delivery agent (with the default
config file!) - eg to report aborted vi sessions.
