Well, you could:
1) buy a CD with the latest release 
2) ask a friend to burn it for you
3) backup your /etc and install 1.5.2 / current
4) use 'etcupgrade' when upgrading via CVS (when you will install
   1.5.2 there should be no problems IMO, but etc's from 1.5.x
   and -current are a bit different).

You should build the kernel and userspace in one run.
If kernel and userland are out of sync, there may be some problems, for
example no network access, no X, no ps/netstat.
