I think the issue not in cables.
UltraDMA mode can be the cause due to number of
drives.
You have to try to turn an UltraDMA mode off.
In order to do that kernel needs to be recompiled with
different IDE flags.
For instance you have:
wd* at wdc? channel ? drive ? flags 0x0000
To turn Ultra-DMA mode off set another flag:
wd* at wdc? channel ? drive ? flags 0x0f00
