This may be completely unhelpful, but I use pkgsrc/print/rlpr
as a replacement for lpr; you don't have to screw around with
printcap at all. /etc/rlprrc looks like this:

hostname: printername (e.g. foo.bar.com: foo)

But it doesn't allow for anything other than remote printing.
