It works! For no reason in particular, I let the kernel sit for a
while, and after 20 minutes (!) stopped after the spinning bars, the
kernel continued the boot sequence normally.
I have no idea what was happening during the 20 minutes, but in any
case, I have succesfully installed -current on this beast. Thanks for
all the help!
