MP kernel wont boot on G33 based motherboard

the netbsd-GENERIC.MP kernel (4.0) wont boot reliably for me on a 
Shuttle SG33G5 motherboard.

The GENERIC-MP kernel usually panics with:

kernel: supervisor trap protection fault code= 0
stopped at PID 100.1 (sh) at netbsd:mpidle +0xb1: ltr %dx

(from memory so thats approximate)

occasionally the MP kernel will boot (1/20 trys) and then seems to run OK

I tried the current GENERIC.MP kernel and it panics with the same fault 
(though at dd not sh)

anything I can try to solve this?
