usb_allocmem crash

HP Pavillion; IDE disks; NetBSD 4.0.1; 2GB memory

I connect a 750GB USB hard drive to the system. Split it into 2 partitions 
of about 250GB each. When I newfs the partitions I get a usb_allocmem 
crash. Interestingly enough on an older Compaq Presario 1500NX this does 
not happen. I do have the ability to install different kernels if 
required.
