Maybe pkgsrc-users is a better place, since this seems to be a pkgsrc
problem.

Are you sure that your /etc/X11 directory is up to date, or whatever
directory the pkgsrc version of xorg uses?
It sounds like the xdm part is out of sync, but that is just speculation,
because I never used the pkgsrc xorg.
