Thanks for the hint, but that's not the problem here. It seems to be
the intel(4) driver who's the culprit; at least using vesa(4) instead
makes the Xserver work (but not in a very useful way... ;-)).
The system in question is a thinkpad X40:
[...]
vga1 at pci0 dev 2 function 0: Intel 82855GM GMCH Integrated Graphics Device
(rev. 0x02)
wsdisplay0 at vga1 kbdmux 1: console (80x25, vt100 emulation), using wskbd0
wsmux1: connecting to wsdisplay0
i915drm0 at vga1: Intel i852GM/i855GM GMCH
i915drm0: AGP at 0xe0000000 128MB
i915drm0: Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730
Intel 82855GM GMCH Integrated Graphics Device (miscellaneous display, revision
0x02) at pci0 dev 2 function 1 not configured
[...]
There are no errors in the [1]log; but the screen stays black, shutting
down the Xserver doesn't work except by sending it a SIGKILL which
leaves the display garbled...
Any hints?
Regards, Jukka
