Sure, but if nothing else that's a cheap way to increase what's available.

That panic however must be some virt68k (and probably hp300) specific bug,
it doesn't occur on e.g. NetBSD/amiga.

N.B. NetBSD/amiga limits user address space to 480MB (and uses 8K pages).

Amiga and mac68k with 8K pages can run pbulk. Just starting pbulk and nothing else is enough to panic virt68k:

I can manually build packages, sure, but that's not all that helpful in a pbulk run.
