How are you starting X?  This sounds like you are just typing 'X' or
'xinit' without using startx or having a .xinitrc in your home
directory.  If you don't have .xinitrc in your home directory, startx
is supposed to default to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc.

Are you sure you haven't blown away some part of the installation or
some customization of your own?
