I don't know which kernel this is, but your problems sound like those of
the serial console code which made it into 1.1. Right at that point the
IO space gets moved, but the serial port's idea of where the chip is
doesn't move. So it writes to the wrong place. The patch has been around
for a while, though I'm not sure where the fixed kernels are.
If you have a kernel w/ the serial patch, then something weird's up. :-(
