NFSv3 support went in somewhere on or about 18 Feb.  I don't know what 
date the sources from the snapshot were.

Yes, the code is backward compatible with v2 clients and servers, but the 
kernel interface changed a bit, which means the binaries and kernel must 
be in sync.
