I don't think this is related to tcsh at all.

Once I notice strange things happening, I immediately shut the system 
down and do an fsck.  There is usually corruption in one (or sometimes 
two) different contiguous ranges of inodes.  I've had very poor results 
letting the kernel do a dump, similar to what you describe.
