Further to my questions earlier:-
the zip drive will mount OK (with the usualcannot mode sense messages) if it is 
mounted on /mnt but will crash if I try to mount it on /zip with an error message about illegal data (or some
message about illegal data or something similar. I can't re-create it now as I'm halfway through I'm
halfway through a download and I don't want to crash the machine!

Is this a known problem or is it,as it seems, something going wrong?
