I could be wrong, but from my experiences w/ my 3-button mouse, it sounds
fine. My mouse can be programmed, and seems to remember its program.
So I can program it to have all buttons the same, or buttons act like
key presses, etc. The press once for down, again for up is different, but
a number of track balls claim to do that.

So there should be a little MacOS control panel which should let you
change the behavior. I think you want the center button to act like
option-left-arrow, and the right to be option-right arrow.
