Just for fun, I tried the new Xserver with the old GENERIC.grf kernel, and it seems to work fine (still has the ethernet problem, but the Xserver is a little cleaner starting up, it doesn't draw the small screens at the top while it is starting.
Watching the kernel start shows that the new one hangs at the grf0 line, at least that is what follows nubus0 at mainbus0.
