Uhm, no. There's probably nothing wrong with your modem; cu's broken.
You might try an "stty -f /dev/tty00 clocal" before using cu.
Or you could use tip.If your /etc/remote file is set right,
something like "tip -38400 com0" should work fine.
The relevant files from my /etc/remote file are:
