It has been a while since I did this, but notice that the file doesn't have tar in its name, that it it doesn't end in .tar.gz or tgz.

Try;

gunzip Xmacbsd.950912.gz

and see if that works.

Also, there are newer versions of Xmacbsd.

How did you get X running if you couldn't uncompress the file?

Anyway, I haven't used uwm, but check your configuration file, might be something like .uwmrc in your home directory. You might have to modify it, or it might not be there at all.

xterm and xclock are in /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm and /usr/X11R6/bin/xclock

you might not have these set up in your path command in your shell config file.
