If you turn on debugging and logging for pppd, and properly set up 
syslog.conf to do something usefull with them, you can gain a pretty good 
idea of what's going on. What kinds of things do you see when you do 
this? At the very least, you should be able to find out what those 1 
second interval packets are 8-)
