If it says it's rebooting, it reboots. Are you referring to the
"Automatic boot in progress: ..." message? And what about the savecore
check?

It probably the drive recalibrating after a SCSI bus reset. This
happens early in the SCSI driver initialization (at least with the sbc
driver).
