Ok, I have verified that a terminal emulator on both systems under the
MacOS with a printer cable does indeed work, as my earlier breakout box
tests have.  

It appears no one mentioned that I must specify 'local' for the getty
for the terminal in /etc/ttys.  With this, things are now working better.

Running as a login terminal with the above works just fine.  

Now, if I log into the getty, get to a shell, and run pppd - I notice
ring and overrun errors on the NetBSD console.  This was running at
57600 and 38400.  I assume I will have to slow things down or recompile
the driver as a howto or email message had suggested (increase serial
ring buffer sizes).  The other thing to do might be to figure out how
to get hardware flow control to work, but someone on this list implied
that it would not work.  

If this still sounds wrong, can someone email me a copy of your /etc/ttys
entry for the device you are using?
