It sounds like the zs_putc routine (which sends a byte out the serial port)
is timing out on each attempt to put a character.

Unfortunately, to work with these devices, I think we'll have to learn to
talk to the silly IOP. That's not something I can do any time soon. But
if there's someone good at debugging the MacOS serial driver on either this
machine and/or the IIfx who can tell me what to do, then I might be able to
do something.
