I suppose I'm dreaming, but is there any chance I can just plain install 
1.2 pretending that /u1 is /, and then mount my g partition as / and my 
a partition as /junk? /u1 doesn't have any OS stuff on it, just user 
accounts.

Or is it truely impossible for the system to boot from a non-a partition?
