If you downloaded the Kernel from the ftp.netbsd.org site that's the 
problem.  You'll either need an ADBTEST Kernel or a GENERIC from 
ftp.macbsd.com that's fairly recent.  Standard support for the LC-III 
didn't make it into the official 1.2 release but was added not long 
afterwards.
