Actually, that kernel is mine... :) And I'm running the latest system
software on my machine, whatever that is...

Ah... for some reason, you can't boot in 16 bit mode (at least not on the
660av... maybe it works for other machines). Set it to 8 bit (256 colors)
or less... if you want to run X, you have to set it to 1 bit (black and
white) mode.
