Subject: ncurses! Foiled again (and again...and again...)

Hi all;

I've spent some time recently trying to get the ncurses package to
compile and install in such a way so that ncftp doesn't bitch and moan
about the 'bad' curses package.

System: MacIIsi, 17 M, 400Meg BSD partition.
Kernel: 1.2 Generic
ncurses: 1.9.9e from the GNU archive.
ncftp: 2.4.2 from the official distribution site.

ncurses compiles just fine, I used:

./configure --with-shared --prefix=/usr --disable-termcap --with-profile

which (eventually) makes the ncurses stuff and puts it into /usr/lib
and /usr/bin.

The ncftp install, however, isn't able to find the ncurses stuff at
all. A quick 'ldconfig -r' showed that lncurses wasn't in the hints
file, even after rebooting, so I cp'd libncurses.so to
libncurses.so.1.9 and then it showed up in /var/run/ld.so.hints.

        4:-lncurses.1.9 => /usr/lib/libncurses.so.1.9

Still, ncftp's configure can't find the ncurses lib and still goes
around saying that I need to go to prep.ai.mit.edu and get the ncurses
lib.

Are there any words of wisdom as to what I'm doing wrong? I
appreciate any guidance you can give.

Thanks very much. Happy Holidays to you all.

				Cheers. --k
