Hey, I had a bit of difficulty getting NetBSD to work on my LCIII,
which isn't far different from yours. Here is what I would recommend you
do:

use the installer to make your devices... I don't know why exactally,
but until I did that, installing base12 crashed the machine consistently,
after I made devices everything worked fine for the installer.
Re-install base12, and any other files that previously crashed the
installer, they probably didn't make it all the way onto your HD.
  Get GENERICSBC-15, the kernel from
ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/arch/mac68k/kernels... Others probably will
work, but that's the kernel I'm using so I /know/ it works... install it
with the installer utility as well. make sure you aren't using stuffit to
uncompress any of these files, the installer doesn't seem to like that
very much.
Check your equipment, are you using a standard mouse and keyboard? Not
all mice are supported, so your best bet is to stay apple-standard for
the first try.
Snag your booter. Use the instructions in the INSTALL readme that you
no doubt have downloaded, and boot the machine... it /should/ turn you
screen to a macsbug-looking white with black text and proceed with a
standard unix-like boot.
I'm no expert (by far!) but that is what I did (with lots of help from
this list among others. =)), and I'm now a happy user of NetBSD.

Hope this helps!
