thank you everyone for your help with pppd
it is now working fine
and my bigest hurdle with netbsd is over

your pppd setup was key in getting my ppp to work
soon I'll have ftp, lynx, pine, telnet, irc, and telnet working
and eventualy I'll allow a few ppl onto my server to use it as a shell
tho Im using a crap 14.4 Promethius ProModem 144E
running a shell from the local console is a piece of cake
and faster than remote telnet access
my email (when under NetBSD is)
root@hobby.earthlink.net
eventualy Id like to enter irc thru hobby.earthlink.net
but I need to get authorization so the servers will let me on
how would I do this?
