The shell is the command interpreter.  Each type of shell allows some
different "value-added" features and slightly different command syntax.
Usual choices are the Bourne shell("/bin/sh"), the C shell("/bin/csh"),
and the Korne shell("/bin/ksh").  The "tcsh" shell, an enhanced C shell,
is also available, but not included in the base release.  Please refer to
the man pages("man csh", for example) for further details.

Usually, "vt100" is the choice of preference for the console.

This is fine.  "#" is the prompt for the Bourne shell(possibly for the
Korne shell as well, but I rarely use that so I may be mistaken).  The
"$" shell is the default prompt for the C shell, which means that is
what you are used to using.

The "dir" command is a "DOS" command.  You might have in the past had
it aliased to the command "ls -la".  This is commonly done in mixed-OS
environments.

It really sounds like you should grab a generic book on UNIX as these
are all generic unix questions and not specific to the mac68k implementation
of NetBSD.
