Thanks to everyone for the advice on dealing with the Microspeed mouse.  Here 
is how it turned out.  I had foolishly set the mouse to PC-3 thinking that 
since I wanted to use 3 buttons, I should set it to 3 buttons.  Changing it to
MS-2 worked.  

Just for everyone's information, The Microspeed, set to MS-2, works with the 
GENERIC-1 kernel and the latest Taras kernel.  On boot-up, it is recognized as
a Microspeed mouse.  The kernels in the colorkit, however, do *not*
recognize the mouse.  On boot-up, the kernel says "mouse? on 3".  

In any case, I am happy becuase I can have color and copy and paste.  One thing
I did notice was that you only use mouse buttons 1 and 2.  On the BSDI
system at work, the right button copies and the middle button pastes. 
However, with the Microspeed, the left button copies and the middle button
pastes.  The right button doesn't seem to be used at all.  Also, the scroll
bars only scroll when using the middle button.  Just an observation.  I am
very happy to be able to copy and paste (and use my scroll bars) at all.
