ok. thanks to everyone for the help, but this is the situation now.

i fixed my original 250mb, but the new 1gb still isn't cooperating.

i reformatted and make the bsd partitions first, and it is better behaved
but when i exit single-user mode and let it continue with the boot, it says
this:

sd1 (ncrscsi:0:3:0): illegal request, data = [some hex digits]

i was told that this might be the problem, and i was using the ncrscsi
kernel, generic #47. I tried the kernel GENERICSBC-9 from puma, but it hung
before even saying "so i sez to him".

mac se/30.

any ideas what other kernel to try?
